Background
In 1984 whilst working as Viticulturist at Penfolds, I was interested in what other varieties could produce reliable new flavours in the Barossa. Marcus Schulz was a leading light in grape-growing and he offered his site to plant a few acres of Zinfandel adjacent to the famous Kalimna vineyard. This was combined with selected Californian clones planted at an elevated site in Angaston. This vintage has produced a soft, elegant style.
Vineyard Notes
Early temperatures in October and December were well above average…enhancing rapid development. Long ripening conditions later combined with low-yields led to good varietal expression in Zinfandel. Excellent sugar to acid ratios reflected cool nights and moderate temperatures.
Winemaking
Cold soak for 3 days and some wild yeast activity in that period. Then seeded with AWRI
culture and fermented for 5-6 days. All second or third use hogshead storage for a short period of 5 months & bottled late August to maintain the unique freshness. Blended with a lively Adelaide Hills Merlot component to create the silky texture. No filtration or fining.
Tasting Notes
Fresh fruit driven aroma with briary notes combined with a touch of cinnamon.
The palate is typically soft, smooth and light with generous sweet fruit balanced with lively acidity and soft tannin. Varietal prune and spiced cherry flavours linger on in the palate.
